A coworker and I were trying to develop some software. Neither of us was an expert in this specific area, so we painstakingly read the protocol, implemented what we thought it meant, watched network traffic to see what we sent, and what a successful process looked like. This job was supposed to take a couple months, and ended up taking at least a year to really get right. And it was a painstaking and tedious process, much like the security researchers in the article. They learned the excitement of finding their way through a system and (hopefully) became professionals who helped secure systems.

Some of the power user problem is that things are moving very quickly. Generations used to have more overlap in expertise, and it was hard won, so valuable. Now it’s easier to seem like an expert thanks to Large Language Models, which can automate much of the creation process. The difficulty here is that it’s probably going to be ten to twenty years before we really have forgotten so much of how these devices work. What will we bring forward? Will the devices get easier to use? Or will they appear simple, but hide enormous complexity? I’m betting on the last one.

And the crazy part is that we now have tools that talk like humans, but don’t know what they’re saying. They’re just finding the statistically most probable next word, based on many disparate and potentially unrelated sources. I’m particularly tuned in to this ability to “act like a human” because I think that much of what my dad did was exactly that.

So it will be interesting to see how these LLMs change us individually and as a society. If they drag us into strange, confusing places, or if they are able to bring new insights. I suppose, like with any technology, it will be a mix of both things.

Today’s inspiration: the slow death of the power user. https://fireborn.mataroa.blog/blog/the-slow-death-of-the-power-user I saw the engineering tenacity first hand at my work.
