My favorite quote from this video is: “By making trying to make them proud, I then end up making myself proud.” I like the thought of that virtuous cycle — building something to help others, which helps me, too.
The video talks about how to get yourself unstuck when you’re in the “Short, Stall, or Flood” portions of making. As she says, “If you want to make something, make something.” And basically, it’s lowering the stakes. Just gather cheap materials and make something. Or, help a friend on their project. The next possibility is a “maker hang” where makers gather every once in a while. And the last is if you’re feeling the “stall” coming on, put out a call to gather and talk through what’s going on with your making, primarily to talk through things, not so much to make progress on your project.
I hope to have a creative community in the future that might be able to help me along the way. I think I’m building it, but it’s hard to be patient in the process.
